Fraser Barras
We set out for the long weekend at Rainbow Beach towing the little boat for a bit of fishing in the sandy straights. The cold weather came on strong after the rainy days last week and combined with 30+ knot west winds on Saturday - it was subartic! So after a quick look it forced us off the water and back to the more tolarable conditions of base.
Sunday dawned a perfect day in comparison though still bitterly cold. Luke was having withdrawal symptoms having not caught a Barra since moving to the Gold Coast in January. And we'd heard reports of the odd Barra being caught so that was all the encouragement we needed.
After a slow start, where the two 60cm Flatheads I managed to catch were assigned to the icebox and a couple of 'change points', Luke started jumping up and down like a school kid - when he pulled the hook on a confirmed Barra sighting.
Having never caught a Barra myself, I wanted in on the action too but a quick cast into the same spot saw me hook another Barra straight away, but my 6lb Bream outfit was no match.
Running over the same spot again, it was only a matter of minutes before Luke got his fix landing a 70cm Barra closely followed by another of the same size.
All up, despite the cold, was a wonderful weekend in the straight. We also scored a big Slatey Bream which had us fooled thinking it was something decent that we sent back and a Grunter for me to take home.

Hi Kelly and Luke,
What a terrific trip and nice results. They say those Grunter are great eating.
That Pelagic gear is looking the goods!!!
It also looks chilly - bbrrrrr!!
Well done - Ben.

Certainly does look chilly, you don't see people rugged up like that holding barra very often. Good stuff.

Thanks guys! Just polished off the grunter for dinner tonight. Quite a good feed ;-) And, I'm not sure if it was the NQ blood in us but we've never been so cold on the water before!
-
Sounds like you two got into some good fish. The Pelagic gear loooks tops!
-
Nice fish mate! Well done!
And yep... ye' old weather is Cold everywhere at the moment!
Cheers
Theo.

Just how cold was it??? Being in Tassy on holiday for the last week or so I find it hard to beleive it would be too bad on Fraser.

Awsome fish, looks like you had a great little session.
Hey i was wondering what boat are you using there?
looks impressive :P

It's a Savage 4.7mtr Pro Angler with a 60 hp 4stroke mercury. Is a good little boat. Luke loves it. Basically it's a lure fishing boat. It gets a work out on the canals up here :-)

Nice fish guys, well maybe not the Mother-inlaw fish, but the others were good.
And yes it has been freezing up here lately, glad I don't live down south.
