FOLLOW UP.just read in local paper that crowd estimate is 20,000.At a $5 entry fee it should have been a great success for the organisers but only 2,500 paid. People were even wading out into the lake up to their thighs to get around the fence to avoid paying. The plane that was to be housed at Rathmines came From Portugal, not Spain as I said but it looks likes the plans may be on hold now.

Nah mate, that is human nature in this modern and very selfish society...

Hi Mick, a mate of mine actually purchased a Catalina in the 90s, Im pretty sure it was called the Flying Scotsman. He ran joy flights out of Coolangatta for about 6 mths, and then shut down the operation. I remember him showing me the plane in history books about the important contribution it made to the war. It had the abilty to take off from short runways and carry very heavy loads, so that made it a natural fit for the Sth pacific islands. Im pretty sure he said that aeronautical engineers said it 'shouldnt be able to fly with such a craft design, yet does somehow!'.

Dont know where it ended up, but back then there were only 2-3 still flying in Oz.

    cheers
    Andrew
