    Default The Singles Scene

Friday before last I got onto my first decent Tarpon.
I’d put him, conservatively, in the 70 cms and after a series of screaming runs and spectacular shakes I gave him the early release- snapped the leader on a lift that couldn’t be avoided.

While Tarpon don’t inspire most fishos up here, I became an instant fan and have been chasing them on 8 and 10 all week. By Sunday gone I’d racked up a dozen hook-ups, a few bust offs and exactly zero landings.
Something had to give, so that afternoon I lashed out on a packet of singles.

Gave them a throw today and landed two out of the first four hits!

As the tide shifted the Tarps wandered off. Thinking the rig was species-specific I was about to pack it in, when old mate latched on. The singles bit back and as a result I’ve invited him over for dinner.

Just little tackers, but far better fishos have observed the reciprocal nature of confidence and success. I reckon this is especially true with artis and it’s one of the reasons I’m getting such a kick out bods at the moment.

It’s also how I know that PB Tarp isn’t far off now!
    Cheers,
    Alex.

How good are singles - you might miss the odd hit but when they're hooked they stay hooked!

    Love ya work Alex...

Tarpon are awesome fish. Once the get a bit of weight behind them they go real hard. I've never measured one I've caught some crackers id say 65 maybe 70 and 3.5 kilo I guess. Used to get heaps up in mackay any making tide. Just follow them up the creek. Good times.

I've been getting some good results with singles lately.
Noticing that I am also catching a lot of squid on trolled hard bods lately too all on singles not one on a treble loaded lure.

    Cheers Pete.
That's them in a #4, but I've a mind to try them on whatever I'm throwing now. I'm sure the're'll be an assortment of sizes in the kit before the month's out!

I read that they get up to around the metre mark but landing an 80cm on 8 and 10 would be enough to make me a happy little SFC.
I see night sessions with unweighted livies and circle hooks in my future!

    Cheers all.

They are a pain in the ass when you're live baiting for barra. Not because they aren't good to fun catch, more because off all the run to drops. Waste of live prawns especially.

I've not seen many tarpon over 75cm in Cairns and a mate of mine is actually THE tarpon magnet, very rarely does he not hook one. He's hooked some beasts.

That place with the lights Alex is where I find the biggest and smallest ones, haven't tried it land based, but there has to be a way?

Alex using singles? What is the world coming to? LOL

    Default *Update: Today's session.

Errr, yyeah... better put some quality split-rings on that shopping list.

I was either very lucky to land it... or it happened in the net.
Either way, I think the replacements will be upgrades!
