We fish in depths up to 40m on headlands. Everyone has their special spots, some like 40m while I find 20 is ok. The fish seem to school and move around. If you get 1 you will get 2 and then wait for them to come back. As Alex says, the favourite bait is live squid but live herring are also excellent bait. I don't have it sorted yet but give me a bit more time and I will be more informed. Can anyone tell me if soft plastics work well at night or do you need something scented like gulps?

Plastics will definately work at night mate. Like you say but. They do move around lots. A lot like their cousins nannagai. If you stop dropping baits in to them they move on. While a few live squid are in the water thaey hang around. I like to anchor up with the squid light on and get my squid as I need them. They seem to lurk below the light while the squid are on the surface. Kinda like a live bait burley trail.

So to answer the question. If you can keep them around the boat softies work well.
