    Default Tagging trip

    Hi

Group of us went on tagging trip to local estuary last Fri and Sat.

Fishing lousy with barramundi, coral trout, emperor, trevally, pikey bream, yellow fin bream, cod, grunter, flathead, fingermark, black jew, king threadfin and blue threadfin but not in any numbers with exception of pikey bream.

With fishing slow my fishing partner and I decided to have a pikey bream contest with him on a hardbody lure and me on prawn bait. I was quietly confident that he would be supplying the beer on Saturday night camp. I had only ever seen one bream caught on a hardbody lure.

We ended up with 151 pikey bream. To my surprise (and eternal ribbing) I had to supply the beer.

I got 74 bream on prawns and he got 77 on the saddest looking small purple C lure with hardly any paint left and broken trebles.

Pikey bream spawn next week on the black moon so hence the numbers in the estuaries at the moment.

ALL other fish were released. Not just the pikey bream.

On Friday I saw the biggest GT that I've ever seen including on DVDs and the popular fishing shows on TV. It swam under the boat in 4 metres of water accompanied by others. It had to be 1.3 metres long (4 feet) and was simply gigantic. My fishing partner has caught GTs to 30 kg (so he tells me) but didn't want to lose an expensive popper on this one.

Interestingly, another friend went to an inshore reef off Yeppoon loaded up for grunter with 20 lb line. No grunter but black jew turned up instead. He got 8 to the boat with the biggest to 60+lb and lost 11 more to line breakages. He only kept 1 @ 119 cm.
