Here's the brochure for fishing tips on the Fitzroy.

Like any new thing, it has a couple of things that maybe should be a bit different but its a top job by Council people.

Take particular note of the mobile phone coverage advice.

Not all mobile phone companies provide good service to the bottom (mouth end of the river).

In respect of all of the service providers, service at high tide may not work at lower tides. As tide drops, boat drops below level of mangroves and your phone is basically trying to transmit from underground. So....sometimes no mobile phone service. The lesson is NOT to rely on mobile phones as your primary alerting mechanism particularly if urgent. Getting to the bank at least reduces croc danger but its a long way to anywhere.

VHF marine repeater on Mt Archer gives excellent coverage on Ch 22 VHF marine repeater as does a VHF marine Ch 16 service also on Mt Archer (600 metres high).

    Crystal Bowl forecast for 2019

    Rain means run-off and/or flooding.

Flooding or run-off in say Dec/Jan means access to floodplain lagoons/creeks for newly hatched fingerlings giving sanctuary from predation.

Rain at the wrong time (or no rain) does little for recruitment.

We had little rain last year at spawning time so no run-off to give early access to floodplains.

We did get a major flood last year (Cyclone Debbie) but it happened in April therefore too late to help recruitment. So most of those fingerlings seeking sanctuary stayed in river.

The last 3 years have seen poor seasons and poor recruitment. That has down-the-track consequences being experienced now.

Never mind. A carbon tax will fix it.

You don't have to be in a tagging club to tag fish.

    Individuals can do it.

    Fitzroy tidal and fresh.jpg

All you've heard about to date has been happening in the tidal/salt section of the Fitzroy. Rockhampton to mouth in Keppel Bay 50km (red lines).

There is a lot bigger fishery in the fresh side above the barrage. (green lines).

The surface area (upon which DAF calculates stocking numbers) is 1400 hectares in the river itself over 75 km. That formula allows 288,000 fingerlings (50mm) stocking per year.

The Alligator tributary takes the surface area up over 2000 hectares which translates to 400,000 fingerlings per year.

Qld DAF has approved (and is currently processing legislation) an application by Council for exemption from the seasonal closure on barramundi fishing above the barrage. Not a SIP so no fees involved.

The plan is to provide an alternative barramundi fishery for when the closure applies in the tidal stretch. That coincides with the best seasonal fishing times. Similar to stocked impoundments, barra don't breed in fresh so no justification for closure.

Other sought after freshwater species in the river are saratoga, yellow belly and murray cod. Its a long story about murray cod but they were stocked in Fairbairn dam in Emerald years ago and many have gone over the wall in the 30 years since. Redclaw also inhabit the fresh.

More estuarine crocodiles (and bigger) inhabit the freshwater than inhabit the salt (better breeding conditions). That was where the 5.2 m one was illegally shot a couple of months ago. There are others of that or similar size.

Largish croc spotted in CBD this afternoon at 5pm. Just off 4RO carpark between the town bridges.

Might be Tick Tock (who normally lives a few km downstream) on his way to/from the freshwater fish ladder at Barrage. He's about 3.8 - 4m. Big enough to give a touch-up.

Might not be too and simply another one making the CBD reach his territory.

Probably pay to be vigilant in the CBD reach for a while in case its a new one.

A few do actually fish out of kayaks in the town reach. Silly stuff but adds to the adventure I guess.

Steadily running out of room for territory and will start to encroach on more habitated areas.

    Very next day.

Looks like there was indeed a trespasser in Tick Tock's territory. Tick Tock chased him away (this time).

I guess the lesson is not to become complacent. Be croc-wise in this river.Observer credible being a newly retired police senior sergeant.Other thing is that ALL crocs look for freshwater and this could have been one of Tick Tock's downstream neighbours who had to pass through TT's territory to get to barrage.

    To: D.E.S.

Latest croc activity in town reach of Fitzroy over the 2 days 20 - 21 Nov. (Tuesday and Wednesday).

On Tuesday, a "largeish" croc surfaced next to 4RO carpark in Quay St at 5pm. Headed across river towards Moores Ck as it slid back under the water. Estimated as between 3-4 metres. Could be Tick Tock going to/from the freshwater fish ladder.

Yesterday ( Wednesday) same person fishing at Devil's Elbow encountered 2 large crocodiles showing aggressive posturing towards each other with open jaws and heads out of water. After a few minutes, one croc turned and headed downstream closely followed by the other.

About 10 minutes later one returned to head across the river towards mouth of Frenchman's Ck.

Observer put the encounter down to Tick Tock chasing off a new claimant on his territory. Escorted the other croc down around Devil's Elbow and then returned when satisfied intruder had departed.

Tick Tock has lived in river between Gavial Ck and Devil's Elbow for a few years.
