    Default canning times

Well I couldn't hold out being so close to the Canning River after my house moving and unpacking over the weekend, so I grabbed the sol and nitro and went for a session. Mostly spent the time familiarising myself to wading the new area but got a few smallish breamski's to pose......

Another nice little Breamin session there Pete.....

    Good work

Quick question: Is C & R practiced fairly heavily amongst anglers over there for Bream

It is certainly a welcomed change having a strong C&R ethos in the Swan/Canning Rivers and WA as a whole. Personally I have to much respect for a fish that is tricky to catch, grows so slowly and is an attractive fish to eat it. You get more satisfaction seeing it swim off to fight another day and grow a bit more than let it die a slow death in a white bucket. They are near the top of the food chain also so they are an integral part of the ecosystem.

I'd prefer to eat a pinky or a dhuey out of the salt water where you know it will not have a high build up of heavy metals or been swimming around sewerage upstream where the Water Corporation has allowed raw sewerage to enter the river on a monumental scale and on a regular basis. The Swan and Canning Systems are extremely fragile and have been totally mismanaged in the past. Slowly money is being spent to sort out the problems that have been neglected or overlooked. Fertilisers used by industry and households adjacent to the River have contributed to the regular algal blooms and consequential fish kills we experience on a regular basis.

Here's hoping my kids can still catch (and release) Bream when they are my age.

That's my piece; sorry to hijack the thread I can't help myself on these issues

Another nice session by the looks of things Pete, great pics too.

Agree with you there Stu, wouldn't eat Bream out of the Swan, dioxin and heavy metal build up in them puts me off, had a word to the Fisheries Dept and was assured that they are perfectly safe to eat, but have heard conflicting reports about this.

Very similar points to down here Stu.......

There seems to be a majority of sports fisherman that practice C & R, but education is the key over here. I didn't know the importance of a sustainable Bream fishery, especially in regard to growth rates etc, until I hopped 'Online' - through a local forum.

It's amazing the amount of people that say things like.."Really, are they that old?".

Something really needs to be addressed down here in regards to bag limits too - 10 Bream is a little excessive IMO

What's the bag limit over there fellas?

Swan/canning is 4 and only two over 40cm.

Not sure out of the metro area because in (C&R) Tournaments in Walpole Albany and Augusta etc the bag limit is 5, so it must be different there.
