Townsville Quick Flick

Hi All,

With the arrival of my brother who has just been posted to townville I decided to take him out on the water for a quick flick. With overcast conditions and rain we decided to fish man made structure and fish the rock walls at the mouth of ross creek and around the casino.

Winds were 15-20 so we stuck close to the rocks trying to stay out of the wind. Fishing +10ft manns stretch and a +4m 90mm scorpion I was hoping we might get hold of a jack,cod,trevally or maybe a stray barra.

With a hour in and no hits I decided to switch to some lighly weighted weedless plastics. I was fishing a 3" slider grub in muscadine colour(natural jelly prawn) and my brother Bj was rigged a 80mm slick rig with its head removed and weedless hook fitted.

About 10 min after the change in tactics as soon as my lure hit the water right at a base of a shaded rock i came tight on to mystery fish. I called a cod before it ran back into the rock and had to wrestle the small fish from its lair. it turned out to be a small jack. It was blotchy coloured but in good condition. A few quick pics it was returned back to its watery home.

On the way back to the rock wall after the wind had pushed us of the wall while taking some pics the electric folded under the boat and a object hit the boat. What the *%$@ was that?? I large silver fish and boil appeared from under the boat and powered away and around the boat in the shallow 5ft of water. The barra would of been in the 90cm+ class and we had managed to hit it with the electric. We could see the bow wave circle thr boat before dissapearing. We fished around the area keeping an eye out to see if the barra resurfaced but no show. I hope the barra was not injured.

Moved on and fihed some sheltered water in the marina where my brother managed to hook up to a Barracuta. After getting a hit on the previos cast he fished the same spot and hooked up. our technique was simple, cast to the shallows and slow roll out then pause, let the plastic sink to the bottom and twitch/.roll off and pause again and repeating until 5-m from the rock and a constant slow roll back to the boat. This allowed us to fish the drop off on the rocks and search dor any active fish holding in the rocks. Decided to head home at 10am to clean the boat and rest up for tonights late shift.

Ahh... so thats where you were Fishing! I had to look at that dam Hill all of last week! Some nice looking waters around there mate.

Really different colourations on that Jack. A good fish!
