Ditched work Friday afternoon before the Queen's Birthday weekend and headed to Peel with Kyle for the afternoon/evening bite. We were looking for big snapper.
Fished hard but only managed some undersize squire and tuskies, a small tailor and a good maori cod that hit my threadybuster. Kyle also found a group of small trevally, five of which fell to his butterfly jig. A poor outing but with great conditions and a beautiful sunset...
Hit Peel again this morning looking for those elusive big snapper. After three hours Kyle had two undersize squire and I had one grinner! Suddenly a very excited group of birds starting hitting bait on the surface about 100m away. We motored over and spent the next thirty minutes throwing slugs at a mixed group of fish.
We ended up with 20+ tailor to 55cm, four big dart and three trevally. A hot half hour!
We then did some breamin over the reef. Soon my cultiva mirashad was monstered by a big bream that busted me off on the coral. The next cast with another mirashad was monstered by a big cod that laughed at my beam gear and busted me off in two seconds. Kyle meanwhile got a nice 28cm bream.
My last mirashad went out and I was rewarded first with a small bream and then by a 32cm beast that nearly did me over on a bommie...
A good day out.
Cheers
Pete & Kyle
