Default Barra and Jacks - line discussion

    Gents,

I would like to get some opinions on line (main and leader) everyone likes to use for Barra, Jacks, Threadies etc in places like the Burrum River, or any other estuary / river system with similar species.

Thanks in advance for any input.

    James,

It really depends on where your catching them, around townsville I mostly use 4, 10 and 20lb braid and occasionally 30 if im fishing heavy country and think that theres a good chance of a big fish.

    my setups are,

    4lb braid, 14lb running leader to a 25-35lb bite.

    10lb braid, 25lb leader sometimes a 40lb bite.

    20lb braid, 35-40lb leader

    30lb braid, 40-50lb leader

also note that I only use flurocarbon for leader material.

    Hi mate,

I run 20 lb braid (Platypus/Bionic) and 40/60 lb leader (Jinkai Plus) on a couple of rods for casting lures and plastics. For trolling lures deep in amongst timber, I run 30 lb braid and 60 lb (sometimes 80 lb) leader.

    Cheers,
    Roo.

I'm oldschool and just use mono, sunny coast so I'm after a jack.
    I have 15 lb, 20 lb 35 lb outfits.
This day I used 35lb outfit, for a 4 kg landlocked jack.......
We ate him at family gathering.............. also won $50 fish of the month Taclke World Kawana...

I think it is more tactics, timing ,tide, weather, I have been reading up...........
    I''ll be back

I am thinking thus far that 20lb braid main line with a 30lb black magic fluorocarbon seems to be good all round solution. Thanks for the responses, I am about to re-line my reels and I don't have spare spools so something that is good for most of my fishing needs is preferable. Leaders are easy to change unlike the main line and I cant afford to buy too many more quality reels.

Randell - nice fish, family would have loved getting into that one.
