A mate came over at 4.30am and we drank some coffees and talked tactics. 5.30 saw us launch and make our way to some snags.
It was a good morning with a light breeze, just enough to ripple the water surface. Bait fish were feeding occasionally and I saw and heard a boof. We worked soft plastics slowly. I got the first tap but missed it. Then Kyle and I caught and released some decent flathead. Later he loaded up with a good fish that was really playing up and did the highest jump either of us had seen. I reckon the tip of his nose reached two meters from the waters surface. Would have easily been 85cm fish that was fat and clean, a real healthy specimen. It threw the hook on that jump unfortunately.
Next was my turn and I struck hard on a tap and received fast and eratic runs into to current. I knew she was big by the length of the runs. The fish stopped, came to the surface and shook her head viscously. Then she went off again and dived down and came back for some bucket mouth jumps. Real drama queen this fish. Soon enough Kyle netted a beautiful barra and it was hi fives. Measured 104 so we didn't muck around got a few photos and released the fish after swimming her for a couple of minutes.
Kept fishing and caught a few more flathead. The decision was made to make a move and have a look around. Went for a cruise and pulled up at a new location and sounded up some fish and bait. Was a bit hard to get a bite but Kyle nailed a healthy fish that made it to the boat, measured 83cm and then caught another fish a short time later.. I got some net practice.
We had a great day out and got recharged for the coming working week.
