Lying in bed this morning at 3.30 too-ing and fro-ing wether or not to get up (knowing I had to work today.) Dragged myself out of bed with self promises of fish begging to be hooked.
Got to the ramp and after a bit of a chinwag with some pros I went on a hunt. Ran into a mate on the water and he had been working soft lures for about half an hour. I instinctively tied on a 'go to' hardbait and set about peppering.
Started out deeper in the water column as I spied a school of smallish salmon on the sounder. About 20 casts in my lure got tapped so I stopped it dead and twitched. This resulted in a solid wack with a good sized barra taking to the surface and shaking her head in defiance, as if you say "you picked the wrong fish buddy". Then she took of deep and put up a very commendable fight. The rod was almost fully submerged once and I had to be very mobile on the boat to stay connected. After a 3min battle I slipped a beautiful fish into the net.
My mate took a couple of snaps for me and I got a bragmat shot. On release this fish refused to be swum and really didn't need it, what I try for with every catch.
I used a omen black Matched to a sol2 baitcaster. Running 20lb fins with 50lb sunline system leader. Lure was a barra slayer.
