    Default Pioneer River

Went for a fish in the Pioneer River yesterday afternoon.
Got some extra oversize herring in the castnet and anchored up at the mouth. Sent out one of the monster herring on my big rod and fished some smaller herring along a rock wall.
First bait got a nice cod. Caught four all up.

About an hour in the big rod starts screaming. Let it run for a bit and set the hook. Felt the weight and thought " hell this is a big fish". Then the hook popped out. It must have come close to setting as a massive barra came fully out of the water, shaking. It jumped twice more. It was easily over a metre. Dang.
Also got a nice Mangrove Jack.

Love the markings on those cod. Too bad about the dropped big fish....better go out and try again.

.......just curious about which hooks you use when live baiting? And placement on the fish?

On the smaller baits I use a #5 gamagatsu shiner near the dorsol fin. On the bigger baits I use a circle hook through the nose or eyes.
